If you’re following me on Instagram, you’ve probably seen the series of prompts I’ve been creating for the past couple of months called Self Care Dares! I love the idea of daring to take some time for ourselves, something that’s easy to neglect when we’re caught up in the hustle of life. It’s a fun little challenge, and a good check in with ourselves each week. This week’s prompt is taking things back to basics – drinking water!
Drinking water is essential for our survival, but if we drink enough water, there are a myriad of other benefits too, such as clearer skin, improved energy levels and brain function, preventing headaches and hangovers, and maintaining kidney health. Here are some ways to add more water to your day, while making drinking water more fun 😉
Buy yourself a reusable water bottle or tumbler
One you really like! Take it with you for water whenever, wherever – and reduce your disposable plastic usage, while enjoying your cool container at the same time.
I love Sunnylife’s tumblers – how gorgeous are these?! Drinking water is more fun already!
Infuse your water with fruit
Adding fruit to your water increases water fun-ness by 75%! Okay I made that up, but for real, that’s how I feel. I love using whatever fruit is on hand and in season (not banana though, I think that would be weird?), chopping it up, adding it to a jug or tumblers of water, and putting it in the fridge to infuse. Especially on hot summer days! Cucumber and mint are great additions too. Be as creative or classic as you choose!

Get an app on your phone
Need reminding to drink water? There’s an app for that. Actually, there’s like a trillion apps for that, with all sorts of features. But the most fun of them all is Plant Nanny – an app that reminds you to drink water by growing adorable virtual plants. I mean…
How much water should you drink?
The “8 glasses a day” rule doesn’t actually have any real scientific basis – the amount of water you need to drink varies person to person. This article can help you figure out what your personal water intake needs are.
Here’s an excerpt to summarise:
“Try experimenting to see what works best for you. Some people may function better with more water than usual, while for others it only results in more frequent trips to the bathroom.
If you want to keep things simple, these guidelines should apply to the majority of people:
I hope this was helpful, and adds a bit of fun to drinking water! I think sometimes it’s nice to put a bit of a spin on something mundane – it can make it feel more like a treat for ourselves than a repetitive task. How do you like to drink your water? If you’d like to join the fun on Instagram, share a photo of your water this week, and tag me @sarahalleyn and #selfcaredare!
